Some years ago I was commissioned to produce a brochure for the church of St Barnabas in Bexhill-on-Sea. You’ll see from its Facebook page that it’s still keen on attracting worshippers (or mere visitors) with all kinds of colourful pictures. The invitation came through my sister. I’d done a bit of design and type-setting for employers in the Eighties and Nineties, but none as intricate as this brochure: A4 double-sided and folded in three.
The invitation came via my sister, who had worked with the priest-in-charge, I think. It took me a couple of weeks to get it to a high enough standard and I had to ask for the price of an HP colour cartridge, enough to print the first 50 copies. Needless to say, I was expected to produce it as “a labour of love”. In this case not for the Church of England and what it stands for. Simply craftsmanship for its own sake.
