I’m sure this would be illegal today
“Is it legal to take stones from the massive deposits lying around the mountains? If it is illegal then who should I contact to collect said stones?”
“No, it would technically be theft – you’d need to ask the landowner for permission.”
Originally Snowdon and its summit were owned by three agricultural estates, Vaynol, Hafod y Llan and the Baron Hill Estate. Today the Vaynol land at the summit is owned by the Snowdonia National Park Authority, Hafod y Llan by the National Trust and the Baron Hill Estate retains its holding. from Wikipedia
